What it is
CIPP (Cured-In-Place Pipe) is a trenchless rehabilitation technology for sewer, stormwater, gas and water distribution pipelines that avoids the need for excavation to replace degraded pipes. The process involves introducing a flexible liner impregnated with resin (epoxy, vinyl-ester or polyurethane) inside the old pipe, pressurizing it against the internal walls, and curing the resin — essentially creating a "new pipe inside the old pipe". PU resins compete with epoxy in CIPP, offering advantages in cure speed (PU systems can cure in hours vs. days of some epoxy systems) and superior flexibility to accommodate soil movements. There is also a variation called spray-in-place, where PU is applied by robots with rotating nozzles that deposit uniform coating on the internal wall. Growing market driven by the massive aging of global urban infrastructure.
Why it matters
Rehabilitation of aging sanitation pipes is a massive problem in cities with 1960-80s infrastructure. Traditional excavation costs 3-5x more than CIPP (cured-in-place pipe) and blocks streets for weeks — unfeasible in dense urban areas. CIPP solves this by replacing the internal pipe structure without excavation: a fabric sleeve impregnated with thermoactivatable resin is inserted through the existing pipe and cured in situ by heat or UV, forming a new pipe inside the old one.
PU systems for CIPP compete with epoxy and polyester in specific niches: better chemical performance in aggressive industrial effluents, faster UV cure in small-diameter pipes, and greater flexibility in geometric transitions (curves, reductions). For sanitation utilities in regulatory expansion (Brazilian 2020 sanitation law, universalization targets through 2033), annual rehabilitation volume is accelerating.
