What it is
Modern kitchen utensils with ergonomic handles (chef knives, spatulas, spoons, ladles, mashers, openers, kitchen scissors) use PU in two main configurations: TPU over-molding over rigid substrate (plastic, stainless steel, aluminum) — the utensil handle has rigid internal structure coated with soft TPU layer that provides grip, impact absorption and thermal insulation; or integral skin PU in small parts where PU is both substrate and surface (rare in food-grade due to regulatory limitations). The application has specific requirements: resistance to dishwasher cycles (hot water, detergents), resistance to fats and oils common in kitchens, knife resistance (handles can be inadvertently cut), dimensional stability at variable temperatures (freezer to oven). Market with reference brands (Wüsthof, OXO, Zyliss, Tramontina, Victorinox) competing in different segments. Growing with residential kitchen premiumization and professionalization of amateur cooks.
Why it matters
For consumer goods and appliance manufacturers, kitchen utensils is a decision impacting end-consumer product quality perception — a critical variable in markets with informed digital consumers comparing brands via online reviews before buying. Poorly specified components generate public complaints that become anti-reputation marketing cost.
Current drivers. Premiumization (white goods with premium finish, connected appliances, strong-brand small appliances) expands technical applications. Energy efficiency regulation (local INMETRO, Energy Star) and substance regulation (REACH, RoHS, CPSIA in children's products) gets stricter. And modern consumers value durability — a product lasting 10 years competes better than an equivalent lasting 3 years, even if initially cheaper.
