PU sealants for expansion joints

What it is
Polyurethane sealants for expansion joints are viscous products applied to structural joints of buildings, bridges, industrial floors, retaining walls and other structures that undergo significant thermal or structural movement. The sealant accommodates structure expansion and contraction without tearing or losing watertightness, preventing water infiltration, debris ingress and joint edge degradation. Unlike silicone sealants (dominant in residential/sanitary applications), PU sealants offer better mechanical resistance and better paint acceptance, and are preferred in structural and industrial applications. They are applied by tube/cartridge after proper joint preparation (primer, backer rod, cleaning).
Why it matters
On a construction site, a poorly sealed expansion joint is always discovered after the fact — basement leak during first rain, stain spreading on facade after two years, structural crack appearing five years later. Each of these failures costs the builder repeatedly: immediate rework, end-customer lawsuits, reputation lost on next projects.
PU sealant solves where silicone and acrylic fail: structural joints with real movement — bridges, industrial floors with heavy traffic, tall tower facades with daily thermal expansion. Regulatory driver grows: performance standards (NBR 15575 in Brazil, equivalents in other markets), environmental certifications that score durability, and export markets for prefabricated components requiring documented sealing.
