Windshield encapsulation (glass encapsulation)
What it is
Polymeric molding around the windshield glass and other automotive windows can be made by RIM PU injected directly over the glass edge during manufacturing. Replaces traditional gaskets, creating monolithic unit that facilitates installation and improves sealing.
The PU technology applied here is typically rim pu (reaction injection molding), selected for the combination of mechanical, chemical and processing properties suitable for the application. Specific formulations vary by equipment manufacturer or final integrator, but the base system has stable characteristics documented in technical literature and segment-specific standards.
Why it matters
For automakers, interior Tier 1s and specialized suppliers, windshield encapsulation is a component where field failure means direct warranty liability — recall, fleet-scale replacement, or worse, OEM specification non-conformance that removes the supplier from the program for 5-7 years.
Current drivers accelerating. Electrification shifted performance baseline: EVs without combustion noise expose every secondary noise and vibration source, raising NVH demands. Emission regulation (interior VOC, end-of-life recyclability, evolving global standards) grows stricter. And dual-source qualification became a global OEM standard to reduce supply disruption risk — opening windows for qualified suppliers to enter active programs.
