What it is
Complements Level A Application 28 (Mining abrasion-resistant linings), focusing specifically on discrete parts for ball mills — massive rotating equipment (diameters of 5 to 12 meters) used in primary ore processing. Rather than monolithic lining applied in the field, here we deal with parts (liners) manufactured in cast PU in molds, transported to the mine and bolted to the internal wall of the mill during scheduled maintenance operations. PU liners compete with hardened steel liners (traditional), vulcanized rubber and rubber-metal composites. PU advantages: significantly lower weight (important for logistics and installation — reduces shutdown time), superior ball impact absorption (reduces secondary wear), superior durability in certain conditions, and ore valorization by elimination of contamination from liner steel fragments. Disadvantages: higher initial cost, limitations in operating temperature. Strong global market especially in gold, copper and base metal mining.
