What it is
Mining abrasion-resistant linings are cast (molded) or spray-applied polyurethane pieces used to protect ore processing equipment from the extreme erosion caused by continuous contact with crushed rock and abrasive slurry. Typical applications include internal lining of mills (ball and rod), chute lining, troughs, hydrocyclones, screens, slurry pumps, transport bucket lining.
Abrasion in ore processing is one of the most extreme conditions a material can be subjected to — some applications exhibit wear rates of tens of millimeters per month in conventional steel. Specialized PU elastomers resist this abrasion with much superior longevity, delivering massive operational gains.
The technology uses elastomers of specific hardness (generally 85 to 95 Shore A), formulated for maximum resistance to wet abrasion (abrasion in the presence of water) or dry according to application. Systems can be cast in pieces that are bolted to the equipment, or spray-applied directly onto the surface to be protected.
Why it matters
For mining operations, processing equipment is one of the largest operational costs — both in initial capex and in maintenance and downtime. A mill operating 200 hours between maintenance versus 600 hours represents massive operational gain: more tonnes of ore processed per year, less shutdown time, less maintenance labor, less component replacement costs.
High-performance PU linings in mills, screens and chutes deliver useful life typically 2 to 5 times greater than rubber linings and 3 to 10 times greater than hardened steel. This translates into quick payback (3 to 12 months) and operational gains that compound over the years.
For mining equipment manufacturers and specialized lining fabricators, abrasion-resistant PU is one of the most technically sophisticated and highest-margin products in the industry.
