What it is
Modern carpets and rugs use PU coatings or foam backings on the bottom face to stabilize fibers, prevent piece movement, provide cushioning and, in residential/commercial carpets, confer properties such as acoustic insulation and water resistance. Traditionally dominated by SBR (styrene-butadiene rubber) in volume applications, PU backing grows in premium segments: automotive carpets (PU backing is standard in premium vehicles due to better acoustic and dimensional performance), high-traffic commercial carpets (offices, hotels, airports — PU backing has superior durability), premium residential rugs. Waterborne PU systems are replacing solvent-based globally due to environmental pressure. PU foam backing is a specific application where a thin layer of PU foam (3-5 mm) applied by spray or molded integrated provides significant cushioning and acoustic insulation — particularly used in automotive carpets.
Why it matters
For the textile and leather/nonwovens industry, carpets and rugs is a decision combining technical performance, aesthetic appearance and cost in a price-sensitive market. Unlike markets with unique technical components, here PU material competes with established alternatives (PVC, polyester, acrylic coatings), and the differentiator must be measurable to justify cost.
Current drivers. Technical fabrics (outdoor, sports, workwear, military) grow in specific applications. Sustainability via durability and via bio-based content pressures substitution of traditional petrochemical materials. Synthetic PU leather (pleather) grows substituting genuine leather for animal-welfare reasons and substituting vinyl for environmental and feel superiority. Each segment has distinct compliance and durability requirements.
