Footwear assembly and bonding adhesives

What it is
Modern footwear manufacturing uses adhesives at dozens of points: sole-to-upper bonding (most structurally critical point), internal lining assembly, insole-to-sole fixation, bonding of structural reinforcements, decorative details, and various other unions. Contact PU adhesives dominate sole-to-upper bonding in medium-high quality footwear, competing with neoprene adhesives (traditional, in decline for environmental reasons). Waterborne systems are replacing solvent-based rapidly in Europe and growing in developing markets. Adhesive choice determines footwear durability — adhesion failure (sole detachment) is one of the most common consumer complaints and directly impacts brand reputation. Massive market globally — each pair of footwear consumes between 5g and 30g of adhesive depending on construction.
Why it matters
For the footwear industry, adhesives for footwear assembly and soling is a decision balancing user comfort, real-use durability, aesthetic appearance and competitive cost in a mass market. Brazil has one of the world's largest footwear industries (4th global producer), concentrated in Vale dos Sinos (RS) and Franca (SP), with relevant exports and expressive domestic market.
Current drivers. Premiumization in specific segments (performance sports sneakers, professional safety PPE, medical orthopedic footwear) drives technical applications. Sustainability with recycled or bio-based content gains space in premium lines. Post-COVID domestic production recovery combined with exports to Latin America and select markets (US, Europe) creates structured demand for qualified raw materials.
