What it is
Mattresses for hospital beds have requirements very different from residential mattresses (covered in Level A Application 08): they must support intensive 24/7 use with patient rotation, be washable and disinfectable, resist bodily fluids and medications, offer multiple support zones to accommodate different clinical needs, and crucially — prevent complications such as pressure ulcers in patients with reduced mobility. Typical construction: core in high-density HR foam (35-50 kg/m³) for structural support, upper viscoelastic layer for pressure distribution, wrapping in waterproof but breathable fabric (medical vinyl, laminated TPU, or barrier fabrics), antimicrobial treatments in multiple layers. Premium models include zoning — different densities in head, trunk, hip and foot regions to optimize anatomical support. ICU and post-surgical mattresses have even stricter specifications.
Why it matters
Modern hospital bed is a complex system with multiple integrated functions: 3-5 position motorized articulation, electric height adjustment, weight sensors, patient monitor integration, directional wheels with brake. The mattress on this bed isn't a passive element — it's a technical component with its own requirements: calibrated density to avoid pressure ulcers, waterproof covering for infection control, durability to tolerate daily chemical sanitization, compliance with hospital fire class (CMHR).
For hospital networks (private groups like Rede D'Or, Fleury, Hapvida, federal public health), choice of hospital mattress system directly impacts three KPIs: pressure ulcer rate in long-stay patients (care quality indicator), batch replacement cost (hospital mattress running thousands of admissions), and regulatory compliance in sanitary inspection.
