TPU catheters
What it is
Medical catheters in TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) are devices used for numerous applications — vascular access (central, peripheral, port-a-cath), urinary drainage, enteral nutrition, dialysis, cardiovascular interventional procedures. TPU is one of the dominant materials in modern catheterization due to its unique combination of flexibility, strength, biocompatibility and processability.
Critical characteristics of medical TPU:
- Flexibility: allows navigation in tortuous vessels without causing trauma
- Memory: maintains desired shape after manipulation
- Kink resistance: does not bend or obstruct during use
- Proven biocompatibility: complete ISO 10993 testing
- Sterilizable: by gamma or EtO
- Processable: extrusion and injection with micrometric precision
- Low thrombogenicity: especially for vascular catheters
Variations include TPU with radiopaque additives (visible on X-ray), with hydrophilic coatings (increasing insertion ease), with antimicrobial coatings (reducing catheter-related infection).
Why it matters
Catheter-related complications are a significant medical problem — vascular infections, thromboses, tissue trauma during insertion. The quality of the catheter material directly impacts these complications.
For medical device manufacturers, the chosen material determines clinical performance, complication rate, medical acceptance (physicians are very specific about preferred brands/models) and competitive market position.
For health systems, superior quality catheters reduce central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI), which are among the most serious and expensive adverse events in the hospital environment.
