What it is
2K (bicomponent) polyurethane coatings are the most robust and high-performance class of industrial coatings — systems that combine a polyol resin with an isocyanate hardener, which chemically react to form a three-dimensional cured polymer film. They are used where 1K (single-component) coatings or other technologies (epoxy, acrylic) do not deliver the required performance.
Applications are diverse: anticorrosive protection of metal structures (bridges, tanks, offshore platforms, containers), coating of high-demand industrial floors, coatings for heavy machinery (agricultural, construction, mining equipment), automotive coatings (aftermarket/refinish), marine coatings, high-performance wood coatings.
The technology divides into two major groups: aromatic (cheaper, better abrasion and chemical resistance, but yellows with UV — typically indoor use or as primer) and aliphatic (more expensive, does not yellow, maintains gloss and color with UV — used in exposed topcoats). Each system has formulations for different application methods: high-pressure spray, airless spray, roller, brush, electrostatic.

Value proposition
Comparison of industrial coating technologies:
| Technology | Typical durability | Relative cost | Anticorrosive performance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aliphatic 2K PU | 15–25 years | High | Excellent |
| Aromatic 2K PU | 10–15 years | Medium-high | Very good |
| 2K Epoxy | 10–20 years | Medium | Very good (yellows with UV) |
| 2K Acrylic | 5–8 years | Medium | Good |
| Alkyd (conventional) | 3–5 years | Low | Weak |
| Zinc-rich primer + PU topcoat | 20–30 years | High | Exceptional |
Arguments for sales to end customer:
- Long-term ROI: premium coating costs 3 to 5 times more than basic alternative, but lasts 5 to 10 times longer — significant savings over the asset's life cycle
- Operational continuity: fewer shutdowns for repainting means more productive time
- Compliance with strict standards: NACE, SSPC, ISO specifications only met by premium systems
- Protection in aggressive environments: offshore, chemically aggressive, marine where basic alternatives fail quickly
