What it is

What it is

Marine coatings are coatings applied to hulls and structures of vessels (commercial ships, yachts, fishing vessels, offshore platforms) for protection against the marine environment — an extraordinarily aggressive environment that combines saltwater, intense UV, biological fouling, continuous abrasion and wet-dry cycling. Complete systems are typically multilayer: zinc-rich anticorrosive primer (galvanic steel protection), high-build epoxy intermediate coat (water barrier), and aliphatic polyurethane topcoat (UV protection, color and gloss retention, aesthetic finish). PU is dominant in topcoats because it combines superior UV durability, high gloss maintained for years, ease of maintenance and cleaning. On premium vessels and yachts, aliphatic PU is standard in visible areas; on commercial ships, it is used in areas where aesthetics matter (superstructure, deckhouses). Anti-fouling (a layer that prevents algae and barnacle attachment) can be PU-based with controlled biocides.

Why it matters

Why it matters

For paint manufacturers, specialized applicators and project specifiers, marine coatings is a decision balancing technical performance, application cost and regulatory compliance. Regulatory pressure on VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) in developed markets forced transition to waterborne systems in many applications, and Brazil follows this regulatory trajectory.

Current drivers. Sustainability in construction and industry (LEED, AQUA, EDGE certifications) values low-VOC products with documented durability. Premiumization in architectural and automotive finishes drives superior performance systems. Export of Brazilian products (furniture, structural steel, sandwich panels) requires compliance with target market standards (CARB in US, EN in EU). Modern PU formulations meet these combined requirements better than legacy alternatives.
