What it is
Food cans (preserves, canned goods, beverages), aerosol cans (cosmetics, spray paints, cleaning products), industrial cans (lubricants, paints, solvents) have critical internal coating to prevent direct contact between product and metal, which would cause can corrosion and product contamination. Historically dominated by epoxy coatings with bisphenol A (BPA), the market is migrating rapidly to BPA-free coatings (BPA-NI, Non-Intent) due to regulatory and health concerns. PU coatings emerge as one of the alternatives in specific segments, especially where coating flexibility is a critical requirement (cans that can be dented without cracking the internal coating). External can coatings also use PU in premium applications where appearance and durability are differentiators (premium beverage cans, cosmetic product cans with metallic or soft-touch finish). Application with strong regulatory dynamics — global food brands (Nestlé, Unilever, P&G, Coca-Cola) lead the transition to BPA-free coatings, pressuring can suppliers.
Why it matters
For the packaging industry, coatings on metal packaging is a decision where massive volume combines with specific technical requirements — mechanical performance, gas/moisture barrier, logistics chain performance, food or pharmaceutical contact compliance. Packaging failure compromises the entire product, and in international logistics, can cost entire batches.
Current drivers. Continuous e-commerce expansion demands lighter and more robust packaging simultaneously. Premiumization in cosmetics, wines, electronics drives structured and aesthetically differentiated packaging. Food contact regulation (EU 10/2011, FDA 21 CFR) gets stricter. And corporate ESG pushes virgin plastic reduction via recyclability, post-consumer content, and bio-based alternatives.
