Mining tailings waterproofing membranes

What it is
Tailings dams and containment basins in mining operations require robust waterproofing to prevent groundwater contamination by tailings — some containing heavy metals, cyanides and other environmentally critical compounds. After the Mariana (2015) and Brumadinho (2019) disasters, the global mining industry underwent severe regulatory tightening, with growing requirements for multiple containment barriers and continuous monitoring. Waterproofing membranes are a critical component of these barriers. Spray-applied PU competes with traditional geomembranes (HDPE, PVC, EPDM) offering advantages in specific applications: capability to apply in complex geometries (without welded joints that are failure points), direct adhesion on concrete and geotextiles, adaptability to irregular topographies, possibility of localized in-situ repair. Secondary applications: drainage channel lining, protection in heap leach piles, waterproofing of emergency containment basin bottoms.
Why it matters
For operators, contractors and heavy equipment suppliers in Oil, Gas and Mining, waterproofing membranes in mining is a decision where aggressive environment (salinity, abrasion, chemicals, extreme temperatures) quickly defeats standard materials. Equipment service life on offshore platform, refinery or iron-ore mine is a direct function of chosen materials — and replacing components in operation is expensive and risky.
Current drivers. Brazilian pre-salt (Petrobras and partners) operates in more aggressive environment than North Sea or Gulf of Mexico. Brazilian mining (Vale, CSN Mineração, AngloGold) has highly abrasive ore flows in 24/7 operation. Post-Brumadinho modernization in mining and decommissioning investment in Oil & Gas create structural replacement volumes. Abrasion and corrosion-resistant PU systems compete directly with vulcanized rubber and special steel in specific applications.
