What it is
Complements Level A Application 17 (Microcellular casual sole), focusing specifically on safety footwear (PPE — Personal Protective Equipment) used in industry, construction, mining, electrical sector, chemical industry and oil & gas. Dual-density PU systems (harder outer layer for abrasion and non-slip, softer inner layer for comfort) are standard in the premium segment. Specific technical requirements much stricter than casual footwear: certified non-slip on multiple surfaces (wet ceramics, oily steel, concrete), antistatic or conductive in explosion-risk applications, hydrocarbon resistance (oil industry), chemical resistance to acids and alkalis (chemical industry), puncture resistance (civil construction). Critical standards: EN ISO 20345 (Europe), ASTM F2413 (USA), ABNT NBR ISO 20345 (Brazil). Massive market — Brazil has millions of workers using safety PPE, with high annual replacement rate.
Why it matters
For the footwear industry, safety footwear soles is a decision balancing user comfort, real-use durability, aesthetic appearance and competitive cost in a mass market. Brazil has one of the world's largest footwear industries (4th global producer), concentrated in Vale dos Sinos (RS) and Franca (SP), with relevant exports and expressive domestic market.
Current drivers. Premiumization in specific segments (performance sports sneakers, professional safety PPE, medical orthopedic footwear) drives technical applications. Sustainability with recycled or bio-based content gains space in premium lines. Post-COVID domestic production recovery combined with exports to Latin America and select markets (US, Europe) creates structured demand for qualified raw materials.
