What it is
The heel counter is the rigid or semi-rigid structural internal part of the heel region of a shoe, responsible for maintaining shape, giving foot support and ensuring the heel remains in place during walking. Traditionally manufactured in rigid leather or reinforced cardboard, modern heel counters are increasingly in thermoformed TPU — a part molded in specific shape that is heated and positioned in the upper during shoe assembly. TPU is chosen for offering a unique combination: rigidity sufficient to provide structure but with adequate flex for comfort, superior durability to cardboard (does not deform permanently with use), moisture resistance (rigid leather deforms in humidity), and capability to mold in complex three-dimensional geometries. Applications in premium sports footwear, safety footwear, orthopedic footwear and high-end formal footwear.
Why it matters
For the footwear industry, thermoformed heel counter is a decision balancing user comfort, real-use durability, aesthetic appearance and competitive cost in a mass market. Brazil has one of the world's largest footwear industries (4th global producer), concentrated in Vale dos Sinos (RS) and Franca (SP), with relevant exports and expressive domestic market.
Current drivers. Premiumization in specific segments (performance sports sneakers, professional safety PPE, medical orthopedic footwear) drives technical applications. Sustainability with recycled or bio-based content gains space in premium lines. Post-COVID domestic production recovery combined with exports to Latin America and select markets (US, Europe) creates structured demand for qualified raw materials.
