What it is
Modern wind turbine blades are huge composite structures — onshore 75-90m, offshore 107-115m. Each blade is manufactured with composite panels (upper and lower shells) joined by structural adhesives in bondlines running the entire length.
Adhesives in these glue lines transfer flexion, torsion and fatigue loads — their failure means complete structural loss. Epoxy historically dominated; new-generation structural PU adhesives compete in segments with specific advantages: faster cure (production bottleneck), lower sensitivity to temperature variations, fatigue performance, integration with VARI infusion processes. Applied at high thicknesses (5-30 mm) in kilometer-long bondlines per blade; typical volumes 1-3 tons of adhesive per large blade.
