What it is

What it is

Polyurethane coatings for wood cover a broad spectrum of applications with distinct requirements and technologies: finishing of furniture (residential, commercial, kitchen, office), finishing of solid and engineered wood floors, finishing of decorative and laminated panels, wood protection for external construction (decks, facades, window frames), and finishing of premium musical instruments. In modern mass-produced furniture, UV-cure and waterborne PU systems dominate (high productivity, low emissions). In artisanal and high-end furniture, solvent-based PU remains due to superior finish quality (optical depth, specific touch). For floors, 2K solvent and waterborne systems with high abrasion resistance dominate the premium segment. The market is massive globally — polyurethane is the dominant technology in modern wood finishing, competing mainly with alkyds (traditional, in decline) and nitrocellulose (even more accelerated decline).

Why it matters

Why it matters

For paint manufacturers, specialized applicators and project specifiers, wood coatings is a decision balancing technical performance, application cost and regulatory compliance. Regulatory pressure on VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) in developed markets forced transition to waterborne systems in many applications, and Brazil follows this regulatory trajectory.

Current drivers. Sustainability in construction and industry (LEED, AQUA, EDGE certifications) values low-VOC products with documented durability. Premiumization in architectural and automotive finishes drives superior performance systems. Export of Brazilian products (furniture, structural steel, sandwich panels) requires compliance with target market standards (CARB in US, EN in EU). Modern PU formulations meet these combined requirements better than legacy alternatives.
