Food-grade floor coatings

What it is
Food-grade floors complement the industrial PU floors already covered in detail in Level A (Application 24), but with specific focus on food and pharmaceutical sector requirements: regulatory compliance with incidental food contact, resistance to aggressive daily cleaning, resistance to fats and oils that cause slipping (and consequently occupational accidents), resistance to severe thermal shock (steam washing at 80°C on floor refrigerated at 4°C), and sanitary geometry (cove bases — rounded sanitary baseboards that connect floor and wall without sharp corners). PU cementitious is the dominant technology in high-demand plants (dairies, cold storage facilities, breweries) due to its unique combination of thermal, chemical and mechanical resistance. Market in strong growth driven by modernization of existing food plants and by growth of the Brazilian pharmaceutical sector.
Why it matters

This specific entry focuses on explicit food-grade requirements: surfaces in direct or indirect contact with food product, raw product handling areas, open product passage zones. Material must meet specific food contact certification (FDA 21 CFR in US, EU 10/2011 in Europe), beyond what's required in general industrial flooring.
Food-grade cementitious PU systems have formulation adjusted to meet these additional certifications. Each paint, primer and top coat used in the complete system must have documented certification, including absence of migration into food in direct contact. For SIF audit and export to strict markets, this documentation is a prerequisite, not differentiator.
