What it is

What it is

Hospital furniture — reception and waiting chairs, companion armchairs, exam beds and couches, gynecological and procedure chairs, chemotherapy and hemodialysis chairs, office furniture — has very specific requirements that differ from commercial and residential furniture. It must be fully washable and disinfectable (without crevices where dirt or microorganisms could accumulate), resistant to biological fluids and medications, durable in intensive use (a hemodialysis chair may have 3-4 patients/day for years), and increasingly must meet strict fire reaction standards. PU appears in multiple functions: upholstery foam (typically high-density HR for durability), covers in medical vinyl or laminated TPU (replacing natural leather and fabrics that do not meet requirements), and sanitary coatings on rigid surfaces (chair arms, bases, metal structures). Market segmented between specialized manufacturers and adaptations of commercial furniture with specific medical components.

Why it matters

Why it matters

Hospital furniture — transport gurney, companion resting chair, consultation couch, dialysis chair, nursing chair, hospital waiting room — must combine reasonable comfort (prolonged use by patient and companion), industrial durability (thousands of different patients per year), and total cleanability (daily chemical sanitization with aggressive hospital products).

Synthetic PU leathers replaced vinyl in nearly all modern hospital applications: better feel (more similar to natural leather), absence of migratable plasticizers, greater durability, and availability in specific colors and textures for clinical signaling. Internal PU foam is standard for comfort and durability. Complete system (foam + synthetic PU covering) must resist 70% alcohol, hypochlorite, peroxide and other hospital disinfectants without degrading.
