What it is

Flexible tubing in respiratory medical equipment are critical components: they connect ventilators or CPAP devices to the patient (respiratory circuit tubing), conduct oxygen and compressed air in hospital systems, and in ICU serve as pathway for administration of nebulized medications. Medical TPU is the dominant material in many of these applications, offering a critical combination: extreme flexibility (tubing bends when moving the patient without occluding), transparency (allows visualization of condensation, secretions, obstructions), biocompatibility (direct contact with air entering the lungs), and durability for reuse after sterilization. They compete with PVC (traditional, in decline due to environmental and plasticizer issues) and silicone (used in critical applications but more expensive). The COVID-19 pandemic caused explosive demand for medical tubing and accelerated investment in productive capacity globally.

Why it matters

Why it matters

Respirator and ventilator tubing is a critical interface between equipment and patient in mechanical ventilation, oxygen therapy, anesthesia and CPAP. Material must combine: flexibility to not limit patient movement, chemical resistance to medical gases and permanent humidity from exhaled air, Class IIa biocompatibility, hospital fire classification, and durability for single use (disposable) or reprocessing (reusable ICU systems).

TPU competes with PVC in respiratory tubes. PVC is dominant for cost, but TPU has advantages in specific applications: absence of migratable plasticizers (critical in neonatal and pediatric), better low-temperature performance (ambulances, inter-hospital transport), and documented superior biocompatibility. In specific endotracheal tubes and prolonged ventilation applications, TPU is the premium standard.
