What it is
TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) jacketing is the application of thermoplastic polyurethane as the outer layer of cables — data cables, power cables, charging cables, industrial cables, medical cables. TPU is extruded over the internal conductors (copper, optical fiber) forming the flexible and resistant jacket that mechanically, electrically and environmentally protects the cable.
TPU offers a unique combination of properties for jacketing:
- High flexibility even at low temperatures (down to −40°C for specific grades)
- Abrasion resistance far superior to PVC or polyolefins
- Resistance to oils, solvents and industrial chemicals
- Durability in repetitive flexing (millions of cycles)
- Premium appearance and feel
Typical applications include high-flexibility cables for headphones and headsets (premium wired and Bluetooth), USB-C and Lightning charging cables, medical equipment cables (requiring high flexibility and sterilization resistance), industrial cables in aggressive environments, specific automotive cables.

Value proposition
For Tier 1 specialty cable manufacturers defending TPU use to OEMs:
Comparison of jacketing materials:
| Material | Flexibility | Abrasion res. | Min. temp. | Halogen-free | Price premium |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Polyether TPU | Very high | Very high | −40°C | Yes | High |
| Polyester TPU | High | Very high | −30°C | Yes | High |
| Flexible PVC | Medium | Medium | −15°C | No | Low |
| XLPE | Low | High | −40°C | Yes | Medium |
| Silicone | Very high | Low | −60°C | Yes | Very high |
Commercial arguments:
- Differentiated tactile quality: premium electronics cables (wired headphones, Lightning/USB-C charging cables) are part of the brand experience — TPU delivers premium touch and appearance
- Durability in intensive use: premium charging cables withstand millions of bends without cracking — PVC alternatives crack within months of real use
- Halogen-free compliance: increasingly mandatory in Europe, Asia and in rail, medical and aeronautical applications
- Application versatility: the same technological base serves consumer electronics, medical, automotive, industrial — economies of scale for vertically integrated manufacturers
- Electrification readiness: EV charging cables require a combination of flexibility, thermal resistance and durability that only TPU delivers at competitive cost
