What it is

What it is

PPF (Paint Protection Film) is an aliphatic TPU film applied over automotive paint for protection against scratches, stone impacts, insects and chemical contamination. The film is virtually invisible when correctly applied and preserves the vehicle's original paint. It is growing in popularity in premium vehicles and in intensive-use vehicles.

Modern films have advanced properties:

  • Self-healing: light scratches disappear with heat (sun or warm water)
  • Hydrophobic: repels water and dirt
  • Anti-yellowing: aliphatic TPU maintains transparency for years under UV
  • Easy application: removable adhesives without damaging paint

Premium segment includes matte PPF (transforms glossy car into matte), colored PPF (effectively "re-wrapping" the car), ceramic-coated PPF (with extra anti-contamination properties).

Value proposition

Value proposition

Arguments for installers and dealers selling PPF to end consumers:

  • Investment protection: on a premium car of USD 60,000 to USD 160,000, the cost of PPF (USD 1,600 to USD 6,000 depending on coverage) represents 2 to 5% of the investment — protecting original paint, which is the most expensive item of a repaint (USD 4,000 to USD 16,000)
  • Resale value maintenance: vehicles with original paint preserved by PPF maintain resale value up to 15% higher than vehicles with repaint or worn paint — direct argument in purchase decision
  • Alternative to paint touch-up: stone impacts on roads, key scratches, car wash marks are avoided — eliminates an entire class of maintenance need
  • PPF vs. ceramic coating comparison: ceramic is a surface chemistry with limited protection (6 months to 2 years) against physical scratches; PPF is a physical barrier that absorbs impacts and heals from superficial scratches — complementary technologies, not competing
  • Functional self-healing: light scratches disappear with sun heat or warm water — quality perception that lasts years
  • Premium aesthetic options: matte PPF transforms glossy car into matte finish (reversible alternative to wrapping); colored PPF allows color change without painting — grows in premium customization market

ROI arguments:

  • Payback on intensive-use vehicles (premium taxis, executive Uber, premium rentals): 18 to 36 months
  • Payback on personal premium vehicles: depends on buyer valuation, but frequently justified by avoiding two or three paint touch-ups during vehicle ownership
