What it is

What it is

Membrane technologies for outdoor apparel — rain jackets, technical pants, ski jackets, mountaineering equipment — combine impermeability to liquid water with vapor permeability (allowing the body to "breathe" during physical activity). Two major families: expanded PTFE (original Gore-Tex technology) and TPU membranes (technologies such as eVent, NeoShell, Sympatex, DryVent, Polartec NeoShell). TPU membranes offer advantages in specific applications: better mechanical durability, lower cost, better performance at low temperatures, possibility of 100% hypoallergenic PU construction. Typical construction: outer fabric (nylon or polyester) + TPU membrane (10-25 micrometers) + inner liner (fabric or knit). Growing strongly with the global expansion of outdoor activities (hiking, trekking, skiing, cycling, mountain running), increasing environmental awareness (TPU is more recyclable than PTFE) and growth of the premium athleisure market. Reference brands in the segment: Patagonia, The North Face, Arc'teryx, Mountain Hardwear, Rab — many use TPU membranes in specific lines.

Why it matters

Why it matters

For technical film manufacturers and converters, technical films for outdoor apparel is a decision where specific properties (optical transparency, gas barrier, UV resistance, calibrated flexibility) define final application. PU films compete with polyolefins, PVC, PET and fluoropolymers in niches where combined performance is critical.

Current drivers. Growth of technical applications in construction (safety laminates, solar control), automotive (PPF, window tinting), electronics (displays, lighting), and premium packaging. Regulatory pressure against PVC in specific applications (children's, food, medical) opens space for TPU as substitute. Sustainability via recyclability and bio-based content creates premium niches.
