What it is

What it is

PU films for fabric lamination are applied in continuous lamination processes where a polymeric film is joined to one or two fabrics through heat and pressure (with heat-activated adhesive) or with separately applied adhesive. The result is a laminated technical fabric with properties not available in plain fabric: impermeability to liquid water while maintaining breathability (water vapor transmission), antibacterial barrier, superior mechanical strength, shape-hold capability (maintenance of shape after washings). Typical applications: fabrics for outdoor apparel (technical jackets, rain pants), fabrics for automotive interiors (headliner fabrics, door panel protections), medical technical fabrics (disposable surgical gowns, sterile drapes, hospital protective clothing), industrial protective fabrics (chemical suits, technical aprons). They compete with Gore-Tex type membranes (PTFE) and with other technical films. Growing market with increasing demand for technical fabrics in apparel, healthcare and industry.

Why it matters

Why it matters

For technical film manufacturers and converters, pu films for fabric lamination is a decision where specific properties (optical transparency, gas barrier, UV resistance, calibrated flexibility) define final application. PU films compete with polyolefins, PVC, PET and fluoropolymers in niches where combined performance is critical.

Current drivers. Growth of technical applications in construction (safety laminates, solar control), automotive (PPF, window tinting), electronics (displays, lighting), and premium packaging. Regulatory pressure against PVC in specific applications (children's, food, medical) opens space for TPU as substitute. Sustainability via recyclability and bio-based content creates premium niches.
