What it is

What it is

Laminated safety glass is a sandwich construction where two or more glass plates are joined by an internal transparent polymer layer (interlayer) that, in case of breakage, keeps the glass fragments adhered and prevents injuries. The traditional interlayer is PVB (polyvinyl butyral), dominant in automotive and architectural volumes. PU appears in next-generation interlayers offering specific advantages: better acoustic performance (reduces noise transmission by 3-6 dB), superior performance in armored glass (bullet-resistant glass), capability to integrate features (UV, IR filters, tinting), and better adhesion in extreme-condition applications. Applications: premium automotive windshields (BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Porsche use in premium lines), laminated architectural glass in high-end buildings and seismic-risk zones, armored glass for security applications (armored vehicles, commercial showcases, control cabins), commercial aviation glass. High-value niche market, dominated by few global suppliers (Eastman Chemical, Kuraray, Kingboard, Sekisui).

Why it matters

Why it matters

For technical film manufacturers and converters, interlayer films for safety glass lamination is a decision where specific properties (optical transparency, gas barrier, UV resistance, calibrated flexibility) define final application. PU films compete with polyolefins, PVC, PET and fluoropolymers in niches where combined performance is critical.

Current drivers. Growth of technical applications in construction (safety laminates, solar control), automotive (PPF, window tinting), electronics (displays, lighting), and premium packaging. Regulatory pressure against PVC in specific applications (children's, food, medical) opens space for TPU as substitute. Sustainability via recyclability and bio-based content creates premium niches.
