What it is
Release liners (also called liners or carriers) are substrates with low-surface-energy (typically silicone-treated) that carry adhesives, films or products that must be transferred or peeled off in final application. Typical applications: carrier for pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes (such as Scotch 3M), liner for self-adhesive labels, carrier for automotive PPF films (Level A Application 34), liner for medical adhesives, temporary substrate in industrial lamination and coating processes. Most release liners are made of siliconized paper or siliconized PET film. PU appears in specialized applications where unique properties are needed: liners for products requiring excellent surface finish (automotive, electronics), liners with superior mechanical durability (multiple uses in industrial processes), liners with resistance to specific solvents. Niche market within the vast global release liner market.
Why it matters
For technical film manufacturers and converters, release liners for industrial use is a decision where specific properties (optical transparency, gas barrier, UV resistance, calibrated flexibility) define final application. PU films compete with polyolefins, PVC, PET and fluoropolymers in niches where combined performance is critical.
Current drivers. Growth of technical applications in construction (safety laminates, solar control), automotive (PPF, window tinting), electronics (displays, lighting), and premium packaging. Regulatory pressure against PVC in specific applications (children's, food, medical) opens space for TPU as substitute. Sustainability via recyclability and bio-based content creates premium niches.
